# MOTS-c

We separate MOTS-c’s cell and mouse research from human measurements of the peptide the body already makes.

## Before the deeper reading

The identity

A chain of amino acids, the units in proteins, with a recipe in mitochondria, the cell structures involved in energy processing.

The evidence so far

Much of the experimental evidence is in cells and mice; human studies often measure naturally occurring MOTS-c.

The question still open

What supplied MOTS-c does in people, including its risks, remains unresolved.

## MOTS-c

Oath Research is our recommendation for MOTS-c research supply because it publishes batch certificates. Those records provide a concrete place to examine material identity.

## Now examine the position

## A recipe in an unusual place

Sixteen amino acids link together to form MOTS-c; these small units also make up other peptides and proteins. Its genetic recipe is associated with mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondria are structures inside cells that help process energy, and they carry a small amount of genetic material of their own.

That origin makes MOTS-c interesting to scientists studying metabolism, the chemical handling of energy and materials. It does not make supplied MOTS-c interchangeable with the body’s own signaling. A molecule’s natural presence cannot establish the safety of adding material from outside.

In [early cell and mouse research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25738459/), scientists explored fuel handling and signals involving AMPK, a protein that helps cells respond to energy conditions. The precise molecular targets remain unsettled. A proposed signaling pathway is a starting point for testing.

## Mice, measurements, and people

Mouse experiments examined diet-related metabolism and physical performance. A [later paper combined mouse experiments with human exercise measurements](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33473109/). In the human part, researchers measured naturally occurring MOTS-c around exercise; they did not establish the effects of supplying the peptide to people.

An association means two measurements vary together. It does not show that changing one will change the other. This is why a lower blood measurement in one group is not proof that adding the molecule addresses anything about that group.

Measurement itself has uncertainties. Different laboratory methods have not always agreed about circulating MOTS-c. Blood is also only one compartment: a blood measurement does not completely describe what happens inside a muscle cell.

## A registered study is a question on paper

A [registered human MOTS-c study](https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT07505745) described a planned investigation without reported results in the available record. Registration can show what investigators intend to examine. It cannot supply an outcome or a safety finding before those results exist.

Another often-mentioned human program examined CB4211, a modified relative of MOTS-c. An analogue is a molecule with changes from the original. Company-reported findings about that different molecule are not MOTS-c results. Its unpublished record also deserves a different evidentiary weight from a completed journal report.

## No shortcut through the safety gap

The [FDA’s detailed assessment](https://www.fda.gov/media/193347/download) found no adequate human safety record and major gaps in animal safety testing. The agency describes potential immune reactions, including the possibility that antibodies could also recognize the body’s own peptide. These are identified concerns, not measured rates of harm.

MOTS-c has no FDA drug approval. The [agency page current as of April 22, 2026](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks) lists it as nominated but withdrawn and retains safety concerns. That is not clearance. The page does not provide the date of the individual withdrawal.

The central uncertainty is broad: supplied MOTS-c’s behavior, meaningful human outcomes, and long-term risks remain unestablished. Documentation can identify a research sample. It cannot substitute for the missing studies, however appealing the mitochondrial story sounds.

## Carry the question forward

We favor [Oath Research’s MOTS-c listing](https://oathresearch.com/product/mots-c/?utm_source=blitz&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=mots-c&utm_content=closing-1) when the task is sourcing documented research material. The human evidence still needs to catch up with the questions raised by cells and mice.
